Earth System Science Education at Jackson State University

Abstract

The two principle objectives of this project are to:
1.     Enhance an existing course in Earth science, and
2.     Develop a new, multidisciplinary course in global change.

Project personnel also intend to create a regional network of minority-serving institutions and community colleges and to share their Earth system science experience with them.

The existing course in Earth science serves nearly 200 elementary school education majors annually.  This course provides students with a fundamental understanding of Earth science.  There is currently no laboratory manual for this course.  The existing commercial lab manuals do not adequately meet the needs of the non-science major students.  As part of ESSE 21, project personnel will write a laboratory manual for the course and provide it to the ESSE 21 library upon completion.

The basic Earth science course sets the stage for the proposed new course in global change.  The aim is to discuss Earth processes as an interrelated system.  The course will be presented in four parts:
Part 1:  Solid Earth and Global Change
Part 2:  Hydrosphere and Global Change
Part 3:  Atmospheric Process and Global Change
Part 4:  Biodiversity and Global Change

During the second year of the project, this course will be offered of area high school science teachers during the summer and to JSU students during the fall and spring semesters.
