Charter

August , 2004 Meeting Summary

Recommendations from August Meeting:

• MSIs should strive to educate future Earth system scientists, even if they are not explicitly identified as such

• Integrate STEM expertise into ESS courses and programs

• ESS will necessarily be implemented differently at each
institution dependent upon faculty interest and expertise

• Students need career guidance, role models and mentoring to encourage entry into STEM fields in general, and Earth
system science in particular

• Mainstream ESS programs require teaching and research in remote sensing, modeling of the Earth‘s climate system and other like endeavors.

• Make inter-institutional connections among MSIs and between MSIs and majority institutions

• Survey MSIs for ESS expertise and interest

• Offer workshops to improve faculty ESS capabilities, and highlight student career opportunities in ESS
